Sevdah's 2005 performances at the :

1. Kurban Bayram Celebration, Seatac, January 30, 2005

On January 30, 2005, Sevdah entertained again the Bosniaks of Seattle at their celebration of Kurban Bayram, which was organized by the Islamic Community of Bosniaks of the State of Washington. Both Sevdah's groups, the children's and adolescent groups, performed at this celebration. The children introduced themselves with a few children poems and a game based on the children song "Ja se uspeh na tarabu" (I climbed the fence.) The kids also danced the famous difficult dance "Anterija." Our big girls danced the dance "Begovice," and the guys performed the dance "Begovsko kolo." Besides our other well-known dances, at this gathering we also performed for the first time our new dance "Rogatička zavrzlama" as a gift to all present Bosniaks, and especially to our dear friend and supporter Hajji Refija Saračević who originates from Rogatica. Here are a few pictures from this performance of Sevdah.

2. University of Washington Slavic Fest 2005, Seattle, May 15, 2005

Sevdah participated again on the second University of Washington Slavic Fest. This year the weather was not nice, thus, there was no parade. However, the program in the Kane Hall did take place. This year the children of Sevdah represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the festival. About 20 little Sevdahites performed the program entitled "Fasten your seatbelts! We're flying to Bosnia and Herzegovina." With the song "Burek" by the Bosnian pop-singer Dino Merlin we took the audience to Bosnia, landed in Sarajevo, showed them our Mujo, Suljo, and Fata, our market-places, black-marketers, restaurants, soccer-players, and our beautiful girls. After this little musical, our children danced for the audience two more dances, "Jajačka truska" and "Anterija," in order to show to the audience how we in Bosnia have fun. Here are a few pictures from this event, as well.

3. Northwest Folklife Festival, Seattle, May 29, 2005

Sevdah is lucky to live in Seattle - the town where the largest American ethnic festival Northwest Folklife Festival takes place each year. This year Sevdah was the only folklore ensemble, which at this four-day festival presented the Bosnian-Herzegovinan, more precisely Bosniak, folk treasure. Our saz player Nihad Djozić sang the old sevdalinka "Majka Muju mladog oženila" (Mother made Mujo marry in his young age) and our dancers elated the audience with their perfect performance of the dances "Oj, curice dina ti," "Jajačka truska," "Rogatička zavrzlama," "Anterija," as well as of the two new dances based on the beautiful sevdalinkas "Karanfile, cvijeće moje" (Carnation, my flower) and "Okladi se momče i djevojče" (Young lad and girl had a bet.) Our girls finally got their first anterias and showed them at this performance. Here are a few pictures from this performance.

4. Bosniak Picnic, Issaquah, June 26, 2005

This summer Sevdah had another successful performance at the Bosniak Picnic. The audience was very generous this year again and filled our fezes with money. This year we earned even more money than the last year. We collected $388. $11 more than at the last picnic. Ma'shallah, as we use to say in the old country. Sevdah does not want to commercialize itself and does not have or advertise any sponsors. Thus, we exclusively rely on our own contributions, earnings, and donations from our admirers who love what we do and how we do it. Here you can find some of the picture of Sevdahites, their family members, and friends at the Bosniak Picnic 2005.

5. Refugee Community Building Conference, SeaTac, September 16, 2005

On September 16, 2005 Sevdah performed in the beautiful Double Tree hotel in Seatac. We were one of a very few groups that were invited to perform in the entertainment program at the Refugee Community Building Conference. Our teens and kids prepared and presented a 30-minute program made of eight dances. The lights in the hall were we performed were fairly dimmed, thus, taking pictures and video recording was extremely challenging. Anyways, here are a few pictures and a short video from this performance. (The video is fairly large, about 7.5 MB, thus we recommend it only if you have a cable connection to the Internet.)

6. ICBWA Fundraising, Bothell, September 24, 2005

On September 24, 2005 the Islamic Community of Bosniaks of the Washington state (ICBWA) organized a beneficiary fundraising dinner with the goal to collect the funds for building the Islamic Bosniak Center in Seattle. Sevdah was invited to show at this dinner the Bosniak folk costumes as a part of the Bosniak national treasure. Our boys and girls and young women and men walked around the audience collecting the envelops with donations and at the same time demonstrating the beauty of our folk costumes. Though our costumes are not original antiquities, some of our garments are museum quality replicas. Here are pretty many pictures from this beneficiary dinner.

7. Refuge Women's Alliance Dinner Auction, Seattle, September 29, 2005

This September Sevdah was covered in invitations to perform. Having helped the ICBWA with their beneficiary dinner, the Refugee Women's Alliance (ReWA) invited us to help them too on September 29 on their fundraising dinner. Our girls and boys danced at this very special event organized by the ReWA at the Seattle's Marriott Waterfront hotel. There were many guests present and only a few chosen folklore ensembles. It was our honor to perform at this event the proceedings of which will benefit this humanitarian organization that helps refugees. This was also ReWA's 20th anniversary. Happy birthday ReWA! Here are a few pictures from this performance.

8. New Americans Homeownership Fair, White Center, October 01, 2005

On October 1, 2005 Sevdah performed at the New Americans Homeownership Fair in Seattle's White Center district. The fair was organized by the International District Housing Alliance (IDHA). Alongside our colleagues from Hawaii, Polynesia, Sudan, and a native American, Sevdah performed in the entertaining part of the program. It was our honor again to perform with these carefully selected performers. Sevdah prepared a 30-minute program simulating a big celebration in a virtual house of new owners. That was a great Bosnian housewarming party. Once again the audience amused themselves well with the joyous Bosnians. To all new and old Americans and to all new homeowner we wish great health, happiness, and success in their new homes. Good luck! Here are the pictures from this performance.

9. Turkfest 2005, Seattle, October 23, 2005

This year again Sevdah was invited to participate at the TURKFEST 2005. This was the fifth Turkish festival in Seattle. The audience was very amazed by the Sevdahites, the little ones, as well as the big ones. We performed several of our favorite dances and our saz player, Nihad Djozić, entertained the audience with a set of Bosnian sevdalinka songs. Besides Sevdah, Behar, the other Bosnian Ensemble from Seattle, also participated at the festival as well as many other performers from the countries neighboring Turkey. Thus, one could have also seen some Kurdish, Iranian, Arab, and Central Asian dances. All these ethnic groups live in Turkey as well. It was a real pleasure to observe the colorful folk costumes from different regions of the Ottoman empire and perceive their similarities. Sevdah also had something to offer in this regard, too. The audience noticed and whole-heartedly praised our girls and their dresses (anterias.) Here is the first album of pictures from the Turkfest 2005 taken by Mili Mulić.

Here is another album of pictures from the Turkfest 2005. These pictures were taken by the professional photographer, Mr. Bryan Dazey. You can view and purchase these pictures also at Bryan's website. Sevdah thanks Bryan for letting us use his pictures on our website.

10. Russian Bazaar 2005, Seattle, November 19, 2005

The Russian Cultural Center of Seattle, WA invited this year Sevdah to present the Bosnian-Herzegovinan folk dances at this year's Russian Bazaar. Sevdah performed at the Bazaar on Saturday (11/19), as well as on Sunday (11/20). Both performances lasted about one hour. In addition to the B-H city dances, for the enchanted Russian audience on Saturday Sevdah also demonstrated the B-H city folk costumes. Of course, Sevdah's children also participated in the program with B-H children songs: Imam janje maleno (I have a baby lamb), Lije pljusak (Rain is pouring), Ja se uspeh na tarabu (I climbed the fence), as well as with two folk dances. The audience enjoyed looking for similarities between the Bosnian and Russian languages and of course they found many. Both languages are Slavic languages. Our master of ceremonies, Svetlana Ramović, made our program even more accessible to the audience by leading it in Russian. The pictures from this Sevdah's performance can be found here.

11. Russian Bazaar 2005, Seattle, November 20, 2005

On Sunday (11/20) we performed a somewhat different program for our Russian friends. Thus, instead of the folk costumes fashion show, we introduced to our audience a few sevdalinkas performed in the classical style, i.e. accompanied by saz. Of course, the songs were played and sung by our saz player, Nihad Djozić. The youth danced seven dances. We amused ourselves quite a lot, as well as our audience. The Bazaar was very rich in every sense, especially tables, which were full of delicious Russian national dishes. By this opportunity, we would like to thank Mr. Vladimir Kirsanov for his cordial hospitality and the Board of Directors of the Seattle's Russian Cultural Center for inviting us to the Bazaar. Спасибо! Pictures from this performance by Sevdah can be found here.

12. Bayram Program, Bothell, November 26, 2005

This year, the Ramadan Bayram fell on the beginning of November. However, due to some technical reasons, the Islamic Community of Bosniaks of the Washington State (ICBWA) organized the celebration of this Muslim holiday on November 26. It was also an opportunity to mark November 25, the Day of the Bosnian-Herzegovinan Statehood celebrated since 1943. Sevdah gladly accepted to participate in the celebration of these two holidays. As a gift for our loyal audience, and especially for our grandmas and grandpas, we prepared a special program. Sevdah's children started the performance with a comic dance interpretation of the song Burek (Meat Pie) by Dino Merlin, a Bosnian pop-rock star. After our children, Sevdah's youth performed a set of Bosniak city dances entitled the Himzo Polovina Sevdah And Dance Suite. Within this suite, Sevdah performed for the first time its Ibrik and Čaršijsko dances. (For more details about these and other dances, please, check our repertoire.) We continued with the Oklada and Karanfil dances, and our dear Anteria. The audience fell in love with our water ewers. Pictures from this performance are coming soon.

13. Winter Worldfest, Seattle, November 27, 2005

On November 27, 2005 Sevdah represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 6th Annual Winter Worldfest in Seattle. This folklore festival is traditionally organized by the Ethnic Heritage Council and Seattle Center. During these three days of the Festival the audience traveled the world - from Japan to Africa, from Croatia to Thailand, and from Brazil to Bosnia. At this Festival our children performed the Jajačka truska and Anteria dances. After them, our teenagers enchanted the audience with the Himzo Polovina Sevdah And Dance Suite. How much the audience liked our stage appearance is clear from the following statement by a lady who watched us, "Even if you did not dance so beautifully and if these lovely girls just stood on the stage, it would still be a pleasure to watch them in these beautiful garments and with these beautiful water ewers." Pictures from this performance can be found here. These pictures can also be seen and purchased at the website of their author, Mr. Bryan Dazey. Sevdah thanks Bryan for letting us use his pictures on our website.

14. Zehra Bajraktarević Concert, Seatac, December 9, 2005

On December 09, 2005 the B-H Folklore Ensemble BEHAR of Seattle, WA organized a concert of the Bosnian folk singer, Zehra Bajraktarević. Sevdah was kindly invited to perform at this concert. Thanks Behar for inviting us. On the request of our audience who followed us to Zehra's concert, we performed once again the Himzo Polovina Sevdah And Dance Suite of Bosniak city dances. Thus, besides the dancing of Sevdah's young women and men, the audience also had a chance to enjoy Himzo's traditional performances of sevdalinke (love songs): Mila majko, šalji me na vodu (Dear mother, send me to the water), Jutros prodjoh kroz čaršiju (This morning I passed through the market place), Okladi se momče i djevojče (A young man and woman had a bet), as well as Karanfile, cvijeće moje (Carnation, my dear flower.) From 11/19 to 12/09, i.e. within three weeks, Sevdah had five performances that would be more than enough even for a professional ensemble. Filled with the after-sweet tiredness of performing, we decided to close our successful performance year 2005 with this show at Zehra's concert. We had 14 performances in 2005. That is quite a nice number. Here are some pictures from this performance as a document in time for a long-lasting memory.
